There are no shortcuts to success. Planning and preparation are one of the biggest foundations in being able to perform at a high level consistently. However, planning and preparation are what many people look to take shortcuts with. After all, the one percenters seem so mundane and trivial. The mere fact they are so basic and simple makes them so easy not to do. Common sense doesn’t always equate to common practice. Shortcuts in training and preparation will then mean shortcuts in the way you play and perform.

Building up a routine that will allow you to perform at, or near your best, is vital in giving you not only consistency with how you play but also greater confidence, motivation, clarity, belief and enjoyment.

Take some time to reflect on what your current routines and habits are and be honest with yourself.

  • What do you do before, during and after trainings and competition?
  • Do you have a routine for warming up/down, nutrition, sleep, recovery, reviewing performances?

You can then use this information as a reference point moving forward to develop or refine your routine. Keeping a diary is an easy way to ensure that you are doing all that you need to do during the week. A diary is also helpful to take any notes from practices, debriefs, games and meetings you go to. A way of constant learning and reflection and will help cultivate a growth mindset.

By taking notes on your performance, you will build up a recipe for what works for you leading up to a game, and what doesn’t. Ultimately, we are trying to give ourselves the best chance to be successful and if we are true to our routines and preparation, then we can live with the results and continually strive to improve.

We all have the same amount of time, the key is how you use yours.

Being organised in your life and in your sport allows you to turn up to your trainings and games in the right headspace.

Greatness is the ability to consistently do all the little things. Understanding what it takes for YOU to play consistently is the key to performing at your best and unlocking your full potential.

Here’s to your greatness.
